Being able to take moments about a point in statics is one of the most important concepts. The only time you don't need to take moments is when you are dealing with the statics of particles which was covered in the previous section.
Moments can be a bit confusing but always keep in mind that you are basically measuring the tendency for something to rotate. A good example of a moment is what happens when you use a wrench to tighten or loosen a bolt. In physics moments were referred to as torques. |
